Problem Description

The firmware of your Mirage Media Server is out of date, or needs to be updated to address a specific issue.

Resolution

The Mirage Media Servers are constantly being developed and enhanced.  Regular firmware updates will provide new features and also provide enhancements to already existing features.  Firmware updates are NEVER automatically downloaded and installed by the server.  All updates must be manually triggered.

How to Confirm Your Firmware Version and Determine What Update is Needed

The firmware version of your server is listed at the very bottom of any tab on the configuration page of the server.  There are several types of updates:

Standard Update - This can be triggered by going to the firmware tab of the config page.  If there is a Release firmware update available, the Firmware box at the top of the page will display it.  If you are running the current firmware, "You are running the most current firmware available" will be displayed.  This command can also be triggered by using a telnet command which will be explained further below.

Hotfix Update - A hotfix update is an update between major releases.  It is designed to address specific issues in the interim before major releases.  Eventually all of the accumulated hotfix updates will be incorporated into the next major release.  Typically, a hotfix update should not be performed unless you are experiencing a problem that a hotfix is designed to address.  Don't fix it if it isn't broken.

Resolution

To perform a Release firmware update:

Browse to the server's configuration page (http://Server_Name_Or_IP/config).  In the Firmware tab, the very top section labeled "Firmware" contains a button to trigger a firmware update.  Click the button and the firmware will be downloaded and processed.  Once your server fully reboots you will be tuning the latest major release firmware.  This can be verified by looking at the bottom of any tab in the firmware page and confirming the version number is higher than it was before the firmware update.

The firmware can also be updated via a telnet command using these steps:

For Windows Telnet:

  1. Open a command line by hitting the Windows Key (the button with the four section flag) and then the R key. Just like CTRL-C for copy, but Windows-R for Run. In the Run windows that opens, enter cmd and hit Enter.

  2. In the command line window that appears, enter telnet <server-ip> <port> where <server-ip> is the IP address of the server and <port> is the target port and hit Enter. For example, telnet 192.168.1.214 23. If telnet is not available, see this link on how to enable it: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc771275(v=ws.10).aspx#bkmk_installVista

  3. Once you see the Autonomic Controls banner appear where it tells you the version of the firmware, hit enter a few times to drop down a few lines.

  4. Type autoupdate and hit Enter.

You should see the update process begin with a download of the firmware.

The firmware will be downloaded, and then the install process will begin.

At this point, you will lose connection to the server as it shuts it self down for the firmware upgrade.

The hardware will reboot itself after 3-5 minutes.

Once the device has rebooted completely, either telnet back in as before, or navigate to the configuration web interface and check the very bottom of the page for a version. It should be greater than the original firmware.

To perform a telnet update from a Mac computer, open the Terminal application, and follow the same steps as Windows starting at step 2 (skipping step 3).

To perform a hotfix firmware update:

First, determine if a hotfix update is warranted.  Hotfix updates should only be installed if you are experiencing a problem that a hotfix update is known to address.  Once this has been determined to be necessary you must perform a firmware update using the telnet procedure above.  A hotfix update is not available from the web configuration page.

Follow the procedure above except replace the "autoupdate" command with "autoupdate hotfix" where version is provided by our technical support team.  The hotfix firmware will be downloaded and installed.  Once the server fully reboots, you will be running the hotfix firmware. Hotfix firmwares are only given out to customers experiencing specific issues, so please contact support for information.

This update will not remove you from the Release channel, so any future Release updates will still be available to your server from the config page or the telnet command.
